Agentic Storefronts, Tinker, and a Quiet Checkout Pivot

Shopify flipped the switch on agentic commerce this week, shipped a new AI app called Tinker, and OpenAI changed how it handles shopping inside ChatGPT. Three stories, all connected by the same thread: your product data matters more than ever.

Shopify Merchants Can Now Sell Inside ChatGPT

As of this week, Shopify merchants can have their products appear directly inside ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and the Gemini app. Shopify is calling them Agentic Storefronts. Everything syncs from your Shopify Admin — pricing, inventory, checkout — and there's no extra fee beyond standard processing. Brands that don't even use Shopify for their main store can list products through a new Agentic plan.

The merchants who'll benefit first are the ones with clean product data — proper titles, structured attributes, decent descriptions. If someone asks ChatGPT for "the best Australian coffee subscription" and your catalogue is sparse, you won't show up. Same principle as SEO: data structure is the foundation. Different channel, same homework.

Tinker Puts 100 AI Tools in One Place

Shopify launched Tinker on March 26. It's a free mobile app that consolidates AI tools from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, organised by what you're trying to make rather than which model powers it. Brand assets, social content, product photography, storefronts — you describe what you want and it builds it.

Smart approach — most merchants aren't comparing language models. They want to say "I need a banner for my winter sale" and get something usable. The risk: if everyone's using the same tools with similar prompts, the output looks the same. Use Tinker as a starting point, not a finished product.

OpenAI Quietly Steps Back from In-Chat Checkout

CNBC reported that OpenAI is moving away from processing purchases inside ChatGPT. Instead, they're building dedicated retailer apps within ChatGPT that send shoppers back to the retailer's own site to complete the transaction. Walmart is apparently integrating its Sparky assistant into ChatGPT soon.

Better for merchants. The original model had ChatGPT sitting between you and your customer — you'd lose the relationship. Now shoppers discover through AI but buy on your site. You keep the data, control the experience, and can follow up. Your website still matters. It's where the transaction happens.

Quick Wins

  • Algolia updates its Shopify integration — Enhanced AI search for Shopify stores. If you're running Algolia and your on-site search conversion is low, worth a look at what's changed.
  • Sidekick stops waiting to be asked — In the Winter '26 Edition, Shopify's admin AI now proactively suggests actions instead of waiting for a prompt. It can also build a working Shopify app from a plain-language description, which is interesting if you've got a simple custom feature in mind.

Takeaway

Clean product data and clear site structure — that's what this week's updates reward. If you're looking for help with that, let's chat.
